Data use and sharing
Data from the Tiny Earth Electronic Lab Discovery Database will never be distributed or sold to a third party. Every Student is given the option to use a pseudonym (display name). If the information is published to the Tiny Earth Public Database website, only the pseudonym and the Classroom name will be used. No real names, email address, or any other identifiable account information will be posted to the Public Database unless requested by the Student and their Instructor.
Data from the Tiny Earth Discovery Database are intended to be used for Classroom purposes and research only. Data and information in the Discovery Database is considered “Unpublished Information” and the owners of the information reserve all rights related to the use of that information.
Tiny Earth Students, Instructors, and Researchers (“Users”) are permitted to access, view, and download Unpublished Information within their designated Classroom(s) only.
Users may not copy, retransmit, distribute, publish, or commercially exploit Unpublished Information from the Tiny Earth Discovery Database without prior consent from the Discovery Database Administrators and the owners of such information.
Anyone interested in citing the Data or otherwise expecting public use of the Data in the Tiny Earth Discovery Database should first publish the data to the Tiny Earth Public Database.
The Tiny Earth Discovery Database stores the personal information provided by Users in their User profile. Users may see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time. Usernames cannot be modified.
Users may request to receive an exported file of the personal data the Tiny Earth Discovery Database holds about them, including any data they provided on this website. Users may also request that any personal data this website holds about them be erased.
The burden of determining the owner and permissibility of use of any information provided by the Tiny Earth Discovery Database rests with the User.
Data will be managed in accordance with the University of Wisconsin–Madison Privacy Notice.

Cookies
This site uses cookies to remember a User’s name, email address, and other account information. These cookies will expire after one year and will not be shared with third parties.
When Users visit the login page, the Tiny Earth Discovery Database sets a temporary cookie to determine whether the User’s browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when the User closes the browser.
When Users log in, the Tiny Earth Database also sets up several cookies to save their login information and screen display choices. Login cookies expire after two days, and screen options cookies expire after one year. If Users select “Remember Me”, the login will persist for two weeks. When Users log out, the login cookies will be removed.
Embedded content from other websites
Content on the Tiny Earth Discovery Database may include embedded content from other websites, such as videos, text, and images. Embedded content is governed by the settings of the other website, which may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Media
You may upload static images of your research findings in designated areas. Supported file types include .pdf or images (.png, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, and .tiff). Videos are not allowed.
Caution: Visitors to the public website can download and extract location data from images, so if you do not want your location detected, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS).
